Industry News
The U.S. Bureau of Labor statistics reports that the construction industry, which currently employs 7 million people, needs to attract 240,000 workers each year to replace the workers retiring or leaving the industry. In addition, those entering the workforce have outdated or inadequate skills for many of the high-demand jobs. In fact, around 60 percent of all new jobs in the 21st century will require skills possessed by only 20 percent of the existing work force.
There have been an unusual number of shortages in the construction industry. The construction industry is facing another shortage in the next few years that will undoubtedly be more difficult (and more devastating) than anything it has seen in the last 50 years, a shortage of people. You usually dont think of people as something that is going to run out. But the millions of baby boomers who entered the labor force throughout the 1960s and 70s are fast approaching their retirement. And for many contractors, that's going to mean a lot of empty seats at the next crew meeting. The good news is that millions of potential replacements are graduating from high school, technical schools and construction management programs. The bad news, however, is that the construction site isn't at the top of their list of career destinations; in fact, its far from it.
How does an AzCCD event help the industry?
For the United States to remain a vital economy, it needs an effective construction industry support system. The Association for Construction Career Development supports the pipeline that will provide the Construction Industry professionals of tomorrow by encouraging high school students to consider careers in the Construction Industry early enough for them to prepare for the training and education they will need for our future.
The Association for Construction Career Development was initiated by the AZ Construction Career Day event team in 2007. The AZCCD members have been in operation since 1999 providing an introductory event known as Arizona Construction Career Days (AZCCD) held in Phoenix, AZ. The event reaches out to high school students throughout the state of Arizona to give them a hands-on construction experience. In conjunction with facilitating the demonstrations, the exhibitors explain the development of career paths, benefit packages, & wages in the particular field they are representing. Each student leaves with a better understanding of the construction industry.
Many times it's hard for students to make the transition from school to deciding what they want to pursue as a career. AZCCD events give students the opportunity to see the construction industry as a rewarding career choice.
The Association for Construction Career Development's mission is to support & promote the construction industry through education and employment.
